Alexis Mian discovered Pilates as the solution to the limitations she kept running into during her lifelong dance practice. She received a B.A. in Theater Studies from Stanford and the M.F.A. in Dance from Mills College, and went on to dance professionally for a number of contemporary choreographers in San Francisco. Always curious about movement, her study and practice have included many Eastern & Western movement forms, including yoga, qi gong, and Thai kickboxing. In 2005, she and her husband Mark founded the alternative fitness center AlterCenter, which they created as their laboratory for human potential, and develop fitness not as an end in itself, but as a medium to develop the many facets of human being: Artist, Warrior, Explorer, & Maker. Alexis has trained other professional dancers & athletes, worked with people of all ages (10-92), worked with women through all stages of pregnancy, and is also trained as a birth doula.
